- Simple Suspension Bridge: These bridges are commonly made with materials such as rope. These bridges do not have towers or any big foundation. Due to this, simple suspension bridges are not very effective. The materials used is very easily swayed by wind most cannot last a natural disaster of any kind. This is why simple suspension bridges are used to cover smaller distances and are not as popular as some other suspension bridges.
- Underspanned Suspension Bridge: The underspanned suspension bridge is a rare type of suspension bridge that was created in the early 19th century. This bridge is similar to the simple suspension bridge, however it has trusses located below the deck that increase strength. This bridge also only spans smaller areas and is commonly made from iron.
- Stressed Ribbon Bridge: This bridge contains cables embedded in the deck and contain a bit of an arch. This suspension bridge is stressed in traction which allows for it to be more sturdy that a simple suspension bridge. This bridge is commonly made from steel rope, concrete or treated wood.
- Self Anchored Suspension Bridge: This suspension bridge is very similar to common modern suspension bridges such as the Golden Gate Bridge. Although it has one major difference. It is not anchored to concrete or rock like other bridges, this bridge has cables that are anchored to its own deck. This puts more tension on the bridge itself which makes it less reliable in the long run.
